Additional days off

In addition to public holidays and school vacations, Belgium offers 2-3 additional days off for students. These are called pedagogical days. On these days, schools hold seminars for teachers, and children are excused from classes. These days are usually held on Mondays or Fridays to provide a long weekend for children.

Some schools in the German-Speaking Community offer extra days off during Carnival, typically Rose Monday and Fat Tuesday. Check with your school for details!

In the Flemish Community, schools are entitled to one or two floating days off. They set these dates at their own discretion. They are usually added to official holidays or weekends to create a long weekend.

Municipal and provincial elections are traditionally held in Belgian school buildings. They take place on Sundays and typically don’t affect the school schedule. If the vote counting is delayed or cleaning or disinfection is required after the elections, classes may be cancelled the following Monday.

Schools may be closed during local festivals or Kermess. This decision is made at the local level. Check with your school.
