School holidays in Austria 2026-2027 (exact and preliminary dates)

In this publication, we will cover the topic of school holidays in Austria in 2026-2027. We will provide the dates of the holiday periods for all federal states of the Republic. We will also list the public and other holidays on which schools are closed. This publication will also explain the circumstances under which additional days off may be granted for schoolchildren.

School holidays in Austria 2026 (second half of the 2025/26 academic year), exact dates

In this section, we publish the dates of school holidays in the Republic of Austria, which fall during the first half of the 2026 school year. These dates are officially approved and published on the Austrian administration’s information and services website. These dates may be changed only in emergency cases, but schools may introduce additional days off.

IMPORTANT! The school holidays listed in this article apply to public secondary schools and private state-accredited secondary schools. They generally apply to primary and secondary schools, schools for children with special needs, vocational schools, and polytechnic schools. Schools in the tourism sector may have different holiday schedules.

Semester holidays:

  • Upper Austria, Styria – from February 16 (Monday) to February 21 (Saturday) 2026.
  • Lower Austria, Vienna – from January 31 (Saturday) to February 7 (Saturday) 2026.
  • Burgenland, Carinthia, Salzburg, Tyrol, Vorarlberg – from February 9 (Monday) to February 14 (Saturday) 2026.
  • Easter holidays – from March 28 (Saturday) to April 6 (Monday) 2026.
  • Trinity Holidays: May 23 (Saturday) to May 25 (Monday), 2026.

Summer holidays 2026:

  • Burgenland, Lower Austria, Vienna – from July 4 (Saturday) to September 6 (Sunday) 2026.

At the time of writing, not all school holidays in Austria for 2026-2027 have been confirmed. Some dates are awaiting confirmation from the Federal Ministry of Education. We have indicated which holiday periods are officially approved according to current legislation.

School holidays in Austria 2027 (first half of the 2027/28 academic year)

The School Time Act of 1985 established precise dates for autumn and Christmas holidays. However, the dates for summer holidays in 2027 have not yet been confirmed. Please take this into account when planning your leisure time and business trips.

  • Burgenland, Lower Austria, Vienna – from July 3 (Saturday) 2027 to September 5 (Sunday) 2027.
  • Carinthia, Upper Austria, Salzburg, Styria, Tyrol, Vorarlberg – from July 10 (Saturday) 2027 to September 12 (Sunday) 2027.
  • Autumn holidays (exact dates) – from October 27 (Wednesday) 2027 to October 31 (Sunday) 2027.
  • Christmas holidays (exact dates) – from December 24 (Friday) 2027 to January 6 (Thursday) 2028.

School closure dates in Austria in 2026-2027

In addition to school holidays, children in Austria are off on public holidays. Some of these are observed only in certain federal states. Schools are also closed on All Souls’ Day, although it is not an official holiday. Below, in addition to the school holidays in Austria in 2026-2027, we have listed all such days.

IMPORTANT! If a holiday falls on a Tuesday or Wednesday, school administration may make Monday or Friday a day off. This allows teachers and students four consecutive days off. These additional days off are called “window days.”
