Changes to the school year schedule

Schools may extend the May holidays by one week. The Ministry of Education, Culture and Science has recommended dates for this: from 18 to 26 April 2026. Check your school handbook or school website for the correct dates.

Schools can deviate from this rule without obtaining permission from the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science. For example, to coincide spring break with the Carnival celebration. In the 2025-2026 school year, the recommended dates for spring break in the Southern Region and the Carnival celebrations do not coincide. If the dates are changed, the participation council must give its consent. They must include it in the school plan before the beginning of the summer of the relevant school year.

Schools may grant students days off on religious holidays that are not public holidays. This applies to all students, not just a group of students who are performing a religious duty or celebrating a religious holiday. Examples include schools that do not hold classes on Good Friday or Eid al-Fitr.

Sometimes a student may be given a day off to fulfill obligations related to religion or belief. For this purpose, your child may be excused from compulsory school attendance with the wording “obligations related to religion or belief.”
